Hands-on

Any OEM from Taiwan, China, etc., or USA importer must send a sample for hands-on testing at their expense. We understand that manufacturers/importers cannot send free samples to everyone who request one, so we are giving them an opportunity to have their scooter/bike exposed to a significant number of potential importers and distributors for the cost of only one unit. The sample units will 'not' be sold, but will be given away or sent to a distributor or dealer who would like to do their own 'hands-on' evaluation. Said distributor-dealer would pay only for handling-shipping costs.

The USA market place has been flooded with cheap gas and electric scooters over the last two years. The end results is a lot of laws outlawing said scooters have been passed, and there is a growing public perception that both gas and electric scooters are throw-away toys for kids. Adults have been willing to spend a couple of hundred dollars on junky electric scooters for kids, but they have been leery about spending several hundred dollars more for quality scooters.

By supporting the certification process, manufacturers/importers of quality electric scooters will be able to separate themselves from the junky scooter peddlers.

Safety

All scooters and bikes will be inspected for poor construction, dangerously weak or improperly fitted parts, ineffective brakes when going down steep grades, poor handling on typical urban poorly maintained streets, loose handle bars, etc.

We will also look at the scooters capability for safely riding at night.

Performance

We will measure top speed, hill climbing ability, and full throttle range. We will spend most of the time, however, determining the 'real-world' range and hill climbing capability over a variety of typical urban routes at varying speeds..

We will also be looking at how comfortable the ride is in comparison to range. It doesn't matter if a scooter can go 20 miles if one needs a chiropractor after each ride.

All testing will be done with a 220 lb rider. Scooters that don't fair well will be tested to see how they handle a 170 -180 lb rider.

Suitability

If there is one thing we have learned over the years is that there will never be one scooter that satisfy's all needs/wants, just like there will never be one motorcycle, car, etc. We will recommend which aspects of personal electric transport the specified scooter best supports.

Reliability

Each scooter will be ridden for 500 miles of daily commuting, errand running, etc. We will report on what is the status of all major components after 500 miles of use. We will report on failures during the 500 miles of riding including flat tires, belt breakage, brake pads, batteries, wires, controls, cable, light bulbs, etc.

Price -Value

We will rank the specified scooter as having a 'poor', 'acceptable', 'good', or 'superior' price-value ratio. Please note that the price-value ratio reflects 'overall' scooter capability. The person who needs/wants a scooter to perform at a certain level (speed, range, power) might feel a scooter with a poor price-value ratio is worth it.

Support

We will report on how vendors respond to any problems that come up during the 500 miles of testing.

Currently available
We will only certify scooters/bikes that are immediately available for sale to the public. We can start the certification process with a pre-production unit, but the production models must be available by the time we are ready to certify the model.

Further, our results and findings are purely subjective and are to be taken as no more than the opinions of experienced users. Whether the vehicles we test pass or fail our various certification criteria we categorically state that our findings may not reflect the actual expected behavior of said vehicles if purchased by the general public. Please note that the actual vehicles sold to the general public may not in fact by the same as the vehicles that are sent to us for testing.

The reader of our reports should have no expectation about the suitability, performance, construction, reliability, longevity, safety, or, any other factors concerning the vehicles we test as a results of learning about our reports, test results, certifications, or our discussions and opinions.

We do not buy the test vehicles anonymously from retail outlets. We get out test vehicles from electric scooter-bike makers, distributors and occasionally dealers. We test what we get and report accordingly our findings. We have an unchallenged five year record for calling them as we see them.

Although we are most certainly not a 'JD Powers' or 'Consumer Reports', we feel our free service is one that electric scooter-bike makers and distributors should certainly take advantage of if they have faith in their products.
